Carbon Reduction Plan

Service Level Management Ltd

Publication date: April 2023

Commitment to achieving Net Zero
Service Level Management Ltd is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040.

We are at the start of our journey to achieve Net Zero and are gathering and analysing our baseline data, and developing our strategy. We are initially committing to Net Zero emissions by 2040, but this is a minimum commitment which we hope to achieve earlier. Our mission is to take action to continually reduce our scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3 emissions.

Commitment to achieving Net Zero

Baseline Year: 01/04/2022 to 31/03/2023

Additional Details relating to the Baseline Emissions calculations.

Our baseline year saw us working in a hybrid manner following the Covid 19 pandemic. Employees worked partly from home and partly in the office, with commuting therefore reduced. Business travel has resumed but is still not at the level of pre-pandemic.

We are aware that in the future some of the emissions footprints from office working and business travel may begin to rise again.

Scope 1: Heating in the office is electric only. We do not have a boiler and do not burn any fossil fuels. We do not have any company vehicles. We have no industrial processes or on-site manufacturing. There are no emissions from this category included in our data.

Scope 3 Employee commuting: There was little office working before October of the base year. Since October the amount of office working has been increasing month on month but we do not have firm data on how many days employees travelled to work. We have therefore used the average data method and have assumed an average of 116 working days for 6 months since October per employee (net of leave and bank holidays); an average of 40% of employees office working; and we used the average UK commute of a return trip being 18.8 miles in an average petrol car.

Scope 3 Purchased goods and services: Not quantified as yet – this may be something we aim to measure in the future.

Scope 3 Capital goods: Not quantified as yet – this may be something we aim to measure in the future.

Carbon Reduction Projects

Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the start of our baseline year.

Internal Net Zero Project This year we initiated the internal Net Zero project. This included gathering data to inform our baseline scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions and production of a more detailed report focused on scope 3 emissions produced through Jisc’s value chain.

Hybrid working We confirmed a hybrid approach to working for our staff, which supports homeworking and brings a reduction in the amount of carbon generated through employee commuting.

IT Infrastructure This year we began the migration of our IT systems onto Microsoft Azure. Microsoft has a commitment to being carbon negative by 2030. Azure allows us to save energy by shutting down services when not in use.

In the future, we hope to implement further measures such as:

  • Upgrade office lighting to low energy lighting
  • Continue flexible working practices to reduce emissions from commuting
• Explore cycle to work schemes, EV charging points and car journey sharing options
  • Update our business travel policy to aim for travel by reduced emission preferences where video conferencing is not possible
  • Develop sustainable office practices by implementing water and waste policies, promoting zero waste and better energy use
  • Reduce procurement and buying locally where possible
  • The senior management team will continue to give its full support to this carbon reduction programme.
